Environmental sensor network
The environmental sensors are intended to get suitable data from the daily life of the user to evaluate the social interactions in an unobtrusive, unnoticed way. These sensors are called environmental since they are installed in the rooms of the user’s house and do not require any user intervention, avoiding interferences in his daily life. There are two types of environmental sensors: presence detectors, based on passive infrared technology (PIR) and door detectors, based on magnetic contacts. These devices provides the following features to the DOREMI system:
- Social interaction assessment
- Estimation of the amount of people interacting at user’s home.
- Activity tracking
- Presence at home
The solution for environmental sensors is based on existing Z-Wave based devices. Z-Wave is a communication protocol for home automation with a high commercial availability and a good reliability and stability. Despite the number of devices in the DOREMI protocol is rather limited, to keep the whole WSN solution affordable and unobtrusive, in the future, more devices based on Z-Wave could be added to the network to improve the precision of results or to expands the DOREMI features, thanks to the use of a widely known communication standard such as Z-Wave.
